Head Model and Texture Assignment from 3D Game Art 2, 2025, concept art done by Cedric Peyravernay. In this class, halfway through the semester we were given the choice to go down a environmental modelling path or character modelling path. This was the first assignment of the character modelling path. Overall I am pretty happy with the way it turned out.
The modelling process on this project was a difficult adjustment. I was mostly familiar with modelling inorganic objects or highly stylized characters, so thinking from a realism perspective was hard to figure out. I loaded up the reference planes and got to work. I started with a low poly sphere to create the form of the skull or the back part of this character's head. After stretching and modifying the geometry with a symmetry modifier, I started to extrude edges around the hairline downward to create the form of the front of the face, like the brow ridge, nose, lips, and chin. From there, I did some more extruding from the chin back toward where the ear would be to give him a jaw and place for the back of the skull and neck to later connect. Afterward I filled in the rest of the geometry around the face like the cheeks, eyes, rest of the lips, rest of the nose, etc. From then on it was a lot of adjustments and tweaks including adding cuts and loops to accentuate certain parts of the characters face.
This project taught me A LOT. Beginning with creating a head structure and ending with the creation of hair and then finally texturing it all was a hard adjustment for me to make, but I was really happy with it when I turned it in.
