Red Queen Model
Project Type
3D Modelling
Date
May 2025
Challenge 4 from 3D Game Art 1, 2025 (Concept from Devil May Cry 5). For this modelling challenge we were given no prompt, just a time limit. I decided to mix the concepts of the second and third challenges (weapon and vehicle) to model the weapon known as the Red Queen from Devil May Cry 5. This weapon is a sword with a motorcycle throttle on the handle and exhaust pipes on the blades spine. I am mostly happy with the way the model turned out but but think I might be able to do better on the exhaust mechanism and also the texturing if I sunk a lot of time into it.
This challenge proved to be quite the task. While under the same time limit as the first few challenges (1 hour), I decided to make an extremely complex object. I started the same as usual by setting up my reference planes, but then immediately struggled with deciding where to start. I ended up starting with the handle mechanism with a cube since the reference appeared to have a very blocky base. After the handle, I made a separate object for the blade similarly to the great axe model. However, I got really stuck when trying to make the exhaust mechanism near the base. I spent the majority of my time in the time limit making the other parts while thinking about how I would make the exhaust and ultimately turned in the sword model without the exhaust mechanism. When I went in later I still struggled to approach it. Ultimately, using a symmetry modifier and careful extruding ended up getting me a geometry I was happy with.
This challenge was extremely difficult for me. I didn't have the greatest of references and I didn't really study the design I was going for hard enough to understand how I should have approached it. This project taught me the importance of recognizing what exactly you are setting out to do when an idea is sparked or a project is assigned.
